Nerio Defense AB – Swedish Innovation Company in Defense Technology
Background and Founding
Nerio Defense AB was founded in January 2024 in Gothenburg by Michael Wallenius. With twelve years of experience as a squad leader in intelligence and reconnaissance operations in the Home Guard, he saw a clear need for better digital equipment for soldiers in the field.
Michael combined his military background with a Master of Science in Engineering Physics and an MBA with a focus on innovation management. In addition, he had worked with wireless technology, medical sensors, and the Internet of Things (IoT) – knowledge that together laid the foundation for the company’s vision.
The Team Behind the Company
The company has been built by three founders with complementary competencies:
- Michael Wallenius (founder) – former CTO of Red Message AB, which grew to 85 employees with funding from, among others, Goldman Sachs
- Benedikt Ivarsson – senior consultant with broad experience in software development and project management
- Kristofer Månsson – experienced development manager with a background as CTO and team leader
Three of the founders are active soldiers in the Home Guard with a combined total of over 35 years of experience.
What Does Nerio Defense Do?
The company’s mission is to improve survival chances for wounded soldiers and increase the success of military operations. They develop digital solutions that connect and strengthen the individual soldier’s capability.
Nerio Defense is in the startup phase and is working toward testing its first prototype (MVP) in the field. The company is in discussions with defense stakeholders in the Nordic region and aims to reach other NATO countries in the future.
Why the Name Nerio?
The company is named after Nerio – the Roman goddess of valor and courage. She was often depicted alongside Mars, the god of war, and symbolizes strategic brilliance and unwavering determination.
